The Irish Terrier is a “classic” terrier in every sense of the word. He is believed to be one of the oldest of the Irish Terrier breeds, however there is scarce documentation of this. It is known that when dogs were first shown in Ireland in 1870 there were several terriers of this strain but there were many other colors besides the red that we know of today. It was not until later that the outstanding red color was favored above all else, to the extent that other colors such as brindle and black and tan were eliminated from the bloodlines.
The Irish Terrier is courageous and plucky and has a reputation for being fearless and quite intelligent. During World War I this breed was often used as a messenger dog. The dog has achieved the nickname of “Daredevil” for good reasons, as it is a dog that does not give up when confronted. One of the early descriptions of the breed describes him as “the poor man’s sentinel, the farmer’s friend and the gentleman’s favorite”.
The Irish Terrier always is a beautiful deep red color with no other markings. This color is accentuated by the harshness of each individual hair and the color is enhanced by “stripping” the coat rather than shaving any part of it.
Exhibitors in the Conformation Rings take great care to strip the coat regularly but “pet people” often do shave the coat rather than deal with the time consuming job of hand stripping. The Irish Terrier is a racy lean terrier, appearing somewhat long of leg, with fold over ears and a square jaw appearance that is enhanced by the beard and mustache. The tail is customarily docked. The coat should be hard and wiry with a softer undercoat.
The males are around 19 inches at the shoulder and the females should be about 18 inches. The Irish Terrier has well balanced movement and should not be high stepping or choppy in its gait. He is a popular dog in the Conformation ring, although not considered to be as “flashy” as the Fox Terrier or the Kerry Blue. Despite this reputation, in 1994 an Irish Terrier took the Best In Show at the premier terrier show of the world, the Montgomery County Kennel Club Terrier Show.
The Irish Terrier is definitely an individual. He knows that he is the best and will not be unwilling to prove it if confronted by any other dog. When challenged, he will fight to the death. It is essential that his owner be aware of this, he has a very strong terrier instinct and although it is not “aggression” in the usual sense of the word, he is not the sort of dog that automatically gets along with any other dog.
However, one must realize that this is a characteristic which is completely in harmony after all with what a “terrier” is. Otherwise, this breed has no equal as far as being a guardian and companion to his family, with children he is especially affectionate and steadfast in his loyalty and protection. Furthermore, he can and does serve his owners well when it comes to being the rat catcher and general rodent killer on the farm and in the house.

We begin this article with the basic facts about the breed, then follow up with an in-depth look at their personality.
Group: Terrier
Weight: Male: 18, Female: 15.5 lbs
Height: Male: 11.8, Female: 11 inches
Overview
The Cesky Terrier was founded by Frantisek Horak in the Czech Republic. The Cesky Terrier is also known as the Bohemian or Czech Terrier. This is a fairly new dog breed seeing that it was only developed in the last century. Many breeders felt that the Cesky Terrier changed too much from the way Horak bred them originally, and in 1980 they again crossed them in with Sealyham Terriers. These dogs were intended to hunt pests in their dens, and therefore Horak tried to create a dog with a slim head and chest and a softer coat than the other terriers at that stage. Cesky Terriers are outstanding hunting and tracking dogs, and they have also proved to be good watch dogs.
Temperament
Cesky Terriers are happy and sweet dogs, and they get along well with children. These dogs are not aggressive, and they are without fear. The Cesky Terrier is a very obedient, devoted and patient dog. They are different from other terriers in the sense that they get along well with other dogs. The Cesky will get along well with people they do not know, but they do have a tendency to be obstinate and very energetic. These dogs tend to be reserved, and it is therefore very important to socialise them well with other people when still a puppy. This is a breed that has good manners, and they are always keen on pleasing their owners. They are very fond of human attention, and will be ideal as an indoor dog.
Care
The coat of the Cesky Terrier should be trimmed fairly often. It is advised that they facial hair of these dogs are left long so that they display the appropriate eyebrow, moustache and beard. The hair around the belly and legs should also be trimmed. A pet Cesky Terrier will require grooming four times during the course of their hair, but a show dog should be groomed more frequently. The Cesky terrier is a very low shedding dog, and almost sheds no hair.
Training
Cesky Terriers are highly trainable, seeing that they are so responsive, sensitive and intelligent. They will however to best with positive training methods as they have very soft personalities. It is recommended to start training these dogs when they are still puppies, as this will provide the best opportunity to build up trust and a good relationship with these dogs. The Cesky is fairly obedient and they have a very loving nature. It is important that the training regime for these dogs is positive and stable. These dogs need a consistent and positive training regime.
Health problems
Cesky Terriers are healthy and tough dogs, and they are not likely to suffer from any of the major diseases. At times these dogs have suffered from Scottie Cramp, which is a minor problem that typically causes their actions to be uncomfortable. This disease is not painful or life threatening. It is still important to take these dogs for regular veterinary check-ups and make sure they get their regular vaccinations as needed.

It was in the isle of Skye that the Scotts divided their breeds of canines into two categories the Skye terriers and the Dandie Dinmont terriers. The later category was declared an entirely separate breed of dog and the West Highland White Terrier found itself belonging to the Skyes.
A West highland White Terrier is commonly called a ‘Westie’ in Scotland and the following are the facts of this breed of canine that has won the hearts of many who have owned them.:
The ‘Westie’ belongs to a species of dog called ‘terriers’. They enjoy living indoors or in a fenced yard. The Westie has a coat of hair that grows up to 2 inches and has a very coarse or wiry texture. They also have a very thick and furry undercoat which is usually white in color.
The Westie grows to about a foot in height and weighs approximately 13 to 22 pounds.
So far as their temperament is concerned they
• bark and dig up mud
• they are not very obedient like other terriers (they seem to have a mind of their own)
• Companionship in important to the Westie
Proper training and handling will make the Westie
• friendly towards friends and strangers
• understand and treat children properly
• chase cats but never hurt them
• become a very smart and good guard dog
• become lively
People who breed the Westie should note health problems:
• Westies are prone to severe skin problems
• A common problem known as ‘Perthe’s disease’ relating to the hip
• Jawbone diseases
• Lion Jaw syndrome known as ‘Cranio mandibular osteopathy’
• A common disorder of the kneecap
• Common liver diseases
• Sudden deafness
• Heart disease
Care and Exercise of a Westie:
• Brush off the loose bristles regularly suing a stiff brush.
• Do not bathe the Westie frequently. Once month will do fine.
• Strip the Westie of its coat once a year and trim it quarterly.
• Keep the fur over the eyes trimmed at all times.
• Frequent walks will kept the Westie more agile and healthy.
History of the Westie:
The Westie was bred as far back as the 1600 on the isle of Skye and belongs to a group of canines known as the ‘Terrier’. The white coated wired haired type of terriers were chosen to cross breed and produce a variety of terrier known as the Poltalloch terriers. Since teen there has been no looking back for the famous Westie, which has had proud owners such as King James the 1st of England in 1620.
Westies were known as the White Scottish Terriers initially and were renamed in 1904 as the West Highland White Terrier. The American Kenner Club has also ruled in 1904 that the other breeds of the Skyes breed of terrier may be included in their club if the terrier had the Westie lineage. Nevertheless even without any formal recognition the Westie had already carved a niche for itself in the hearts and minds of Royal and common folk alike.

Terrier Dogs happen to have a wide variety of dispositions and temperaments that would interest anyone. They range from the funny to the aggressive. The variety of characteristics that these dogs show make them fit with any any time of owner. Though a warning should be issued as some can get very mischievous while others may tend to be very timid. Terriers were initially bred as hunting dogs meant to help in the catching of foxes, otters, rats, vermin and so on. breeds today have become domesticated though and are being added as companions or toy breeds.
Just like other breeds of dogs, the terriers have a wide variety of characteristics that make each one different from the other. Many owners have found these dogs to be faithful to the families that they live with and go to an extreme t protect the home that he lives in. They are distinguished for their guarding techniques and can easily differentiate between those who intend to cause harm and those who do not. their protective instinct is supposed to have come from the fact that earlier breeds were used in dog fights. After the sport was banned, breeders shifted to producing these dogs for the domestic market where many cross breeds produced keen, protective terriers.
Some notable breeds that came through this process include the Airedale Terrier, American Stafforshire Terrier and the Bedlington Terrier.
These dogs have a great talent and respond well to any form of training. In fact, Some Breeds are said to be endowed with a lot of natural intelligence which makes them ideal for training in obedience and for ring shows. Dogs of this kind require a lot of challenging activities that would train them physically and mentally. They must be involved in some sort of activity always or they will cause destruction if they get bored. As these dogs have greater intelligence, they will ultimately not cause that much of a wreck as larger breeds. Some types of these dogs also have great determination and a lot of disposition as well which gives them a sense of confidence. Some of these terrier dogs are fun loving and tend to be playful. They have a lively and gay nature makes them great entertainment for the family and have been loved for centuries for this very fun and frolic nature of theirs.
Terrier dogs that are social, need enough social exposure to get ready during maturity. Most of these kind of dogs tend to dominate the others when they reach that age of authority. The bull terrier types are the best example for this type. Surprisingly, some of the toughest terriers are actually the smallest. For example, the Cairn Dogs are relatively small and have a stocky build, yet they portray a nature of ever being ready to do things when it is necessary.
Most of the terrier breeds still maintain the traditional characteristics. They make great hunters but even then have a keen preference to human companionship. Many of these dogs have the speed, power and endurance that their predecessors possessed. It is not surprising that these dogs have the various characteristics that owners would love, as these dogs have been around for a very long time.

When choosing a dog, it’s important to choose the breed that’s right for you. In order to do that, you need to know the characteristics and temperament of the breed you’re thinking about adopting or purchasing before you do so. The Yorkshire terrier is just one breed among many from which to choose.

It is believed that the Yorkshire terrier was developed by breeding the Clydesdale terrier or Paisley terrier with other types of terrier such as the English Black and Tan toy terrier and the Skye terrier. It is also thought that the Maltese terrier may have been crossed with these breeds to help produce the long coat. The Yorkshire terrier was initially larger than it is today and was bred in the 19th century in a city in north England called Yorkshire, hence the name Yorkshire terrier. These dogs were bred to catch rats in clothing mills and, in the beginning, belonged to the working class, especially the weavers. Eventually, they became companions to the European high society.

Yorkshire terriers, also known as Yorkies, are usually playful, very friendly, brave, determined, investigative, highly energetic, loyal and clever. They are easily adaptable to all surroundings and travel well. They require limited exercise but need daily interaction with people and daily walks or may display behavior problems. They are eager for adventure and easy to train, although they can be stubborn if not given proper boundaries.

When owners display pack leadership, Yorkies are very sweet and loving and can be trusted with children; however, problems arise when owners allow them to “take over” the house because they are cute and small. They are affectionate with their masters but may become suspicious of strangers and aggressive to strange dogs and small animals and can become “yappy” if not given pack leadership by their owners.

Yorkies eat very little but can be difficult to housebreak. They think they are larger than they are and will defend their territory. They make excellent watch dogs because they have an acute sense of hearing and will alert their owners to signs of intruders. Yorkshire terriers do not like to be ignored and require more human companionship and attention than any other breed. The more attention they get, the better. They are lap dogs that prefer to be held on their owners’ laps all day.

A Yorkshire terrier’s coat is ultra long, fine and silky, usually steel blue on body and tail and tan elsewhere. They are born black, gradually attaining blue and tan coloration. Tail is usually docked to half its length. If dogs are not for showing, owners usually go for the shaggy look. A Yorkie has an abundant amount of hair on its head, which must either be trimmed short or kept out of the eyes with a band. Its hair keeps growing and has to be trimmed. Most owners have the coats trimmed short or shaved for convenience and hygiene. The Yorkshire terrier has no undercoat, which is desirable for some people with allergies, and sheds little to no hair. The Yorkie’s height is 6 to 7 inches, and weight is around 7 pounds.

The life expectancy of a Yorkie is about 12 to 15 years, but health problems that can occur include early tooth decay, poor tolerance to anesthesia and delicate digestion. They are also prone to bronchitis and can sometimes suffer paralysis in the hindquarters, caused by herniated disks and other spine problems. Fall or knocks can cause fractures. Females often have trouble delivering.

Congenital/hereditary defects can occur if not bred properly. These include patella subluxation, open fontanels, Perthe’s disease and smaller incidence of elongated soft palate and tendency to collapsed trachea.

Grooming for Yorkshire terriers consists of daily to weekly combing and brushing. Ears and eyes should be cleaned daily, and teeth should be cleaned regularly.

Yorkies are good dogs for apartment life. They are very active indoors and do okay without a yard. They are sensitive to the cold and prefer warm climates.

Yorkshire terriers are small in body but big in personality. They make great companions but require lots of human interaction and attention to grooming, so it’s best to determine if you have the extra time for this breed before choosing it.

Getting to know your dog starts by getting to know its breed, and that includes getting a better idea about its appearance, personality, and health requirements. Here’s what you need to know about the Boston terrier:
Nicknamed the “American Gentleman,” the Boston terrier is a cross between an English White Terrier and an English bulldog, first originating sometime during the late 19th century. During that era, the breed was called Hooper’s Judge, weighing around 30 pounds. Over the years, the Boston terrier’s name changed and it was bred down in size. Although the early breed was classified as lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight, today they are usually between 10 and 25 pounds.
The interesting thing about the Boston terrier is that it was the first American breed to be recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893. During the late 1870s, these dogs were used for pit fighting but today, they are known as being the first non-sporting dog bred in the United States, a docile breed. Hitting a peak in popularity during the 1920s, the Boston terrier remains a nice choice for families although males tend to challenge other dogs for turf.Physical Appearance
Again, the Boston terrier is not a large breed, being very compact but well proportioned. The dog has a short tail, short muzzle, and alert, erect ears. Height can vary but most dogs in this breed are between 15 and 17 inches at the withers. As with other terrier breeds, you will find the Boston terrier marked with various colors and color combinations, as indicated below.
* Black with White Markings
* Brindle
* Seal
* Combination of black, brindle, and seal
Regardless of the color of the terrier, the chest, band around the neck, muzzle, and partially up on the forelegs, along with the hocks and rear legs should be white. Then, for American Kennel Club standards, the Boston terrier should also present a white blaze that goes between the eyes but without touching.Temperament and Personality
The most noticeable characteristics of the Boston terrier are alertness, gentleness, and excellent manners. Because of the sweet disposition of this breed, it makes an excellent companion dog. Typically, the breed loves being around people, specifically adults. However, if socialized young, they also do quite well around children and other animals. Interestingly, the Boston terrier is not a big barker. While they will alert when necessary, barking is seldom, making them a great choice for apartment-dwellers.Health
For the most part, the Boston terrier is a strong, healthy breed. However, the breed does not handle heat and humidity well, which is because of the short muzzle. In fact, too much heat could lead to heat exhaustion. Although the average age of the Boston terrier is around 13, some will live to 15 or 16.
Due to the short muzzles, the Boston terrier does have a few considerations. For one thing, they can “reverse sneeze,” which is simply a gasp and snort. While it sounds horrible to the owner, this does not hurt the dog. If you find your Boston terrier becoming overly excited with an episode of reverse sneezing followed, just calm the dog down and the episode will stop.
Another non-dangerous tendency is to snort and snore, again because of the short muzzle. Depending on the dog, he or she may actually need minor surgery to help, making breathing easier. Therefore, if you feel your Boston terrier is not getting adequate air, we recommend you talk to your veterinarian. Finally, some Boston terriers will have eye problems such as ulcers. With a prominent eye structure, you would want to watch for any signs of injury or redness.

Originally bred in the 19th century by Parson Jack Russell, an avid hunter, selected traits that would assist him in hunting. Working dogs, Jack Russell Terriers were bred to be fearless and feisty to flush out prey from the forest, particular foxes. As a working dog, Jack Russell Terriers tend to have an athletic build and boundless energy. Jack Russell Terriers are very intelligent, but also willful and stubborn, which can make them extremely difficult to train without consistency.

As a hunting and working dog, Jack Russell Terriers do have the hunting instinct in them and have been know to consider smaller household pets prey. However, this does not mean that they cannot be good family pets. Jack Russell Terriers are usually very good with children and gentle with them if they understand how to approach dogs. Jack Russell Terriers live 15 years or more. They grow to an average 10 to 12 inches in height and 14 to 18 pounds in weight. Jack Russell Terriers have several different types of coats of the shorthaired variety (some are smooth, some are not) but all are easy to maintain with regular brushing.

Jack Russell Terriers are suited for all kinds of living, but do need to be exercised regularly, at least once a day, due to their seemingly boundless energy. Without regular opportunities to exercise and play, they will become bored and begin to bark at everything and become destructive. If a Jack Russell Terrier must be left alone for an extended period of time without the opportunity to exercise, it is recommended that they be crated until it is possible to let them exercise.

Jack Russell Terriers are fearless and will run off without thinking. A fenced in area is a must for a Jack Russell Terrier, but the fence needs to be deep enough as they are diggers, and tall enough to not jump over. An average sized Jack Russell Terrier can jump five feet quite easily. There are some health concerns with the breed. Some Jack Russell Terriers are prone to dislocation of the kneecaps, inherited eye diseases, deafness, Legg Perthes – a disease of the hip joints, and cataracts. Currently, there is some dispute about the breed and breed standards. The AKC does not officially recognize the Jack Russell Terrier, considered a working dog. It only officially recognizes the Parson Russell Terrier.

There is a website that has great information on Jack Russell Terriers and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

Finding a dog that also suits your needs isn’t always easy. Most people will impulsively get the first dog that strikes a chord in their heart, while some people prefer to do their research and find out all about potential dogs they can get. If you’re interested in something like a toy Manchester Terrier for instance there are a few things that you would want to learn about it first.

And the very first thing you should know about is that Manchester Terriers come in two different categories. The Toy Manchester Terrier variety and the Standard Manchester Terrier variety. Both these dogs have the same general characteristics with their size being the main difference between them.

For instance the toy Manchester Terrier variety can weigh between 6-12 pounds while the standard Manchester Terrier variety weighs between 16-19 pounds. There is also a marked difference in height between these two different varieties and this is reflected in the lack of inches in the toy Manchester Terrier variety. These dogs can grow up to about 10-12 inches while the standard variety grows about 15-17 inches in height.

Both types of Manchester Terrier are highly intelligent ad both make loyal companions. Unlike the standard Manchester Terrier however, the toy Manchester Terrier is not necessarily used for the hunting skills it possesses. Having said that, whether you get the standard Manchester Terrier or whether you get the toy Manchester Terrier these days the last thing that people do will be to use them to hunt, be it the rats they were bred specifically to hunt, or anything else.

These dogs are primarily used as companion dogs or competitive dogs. These dogs are highly intelligent and can be trained if this is taken of at a very early age. Otherwise both the toy Manchester Terrier and the standard Manchester Terrier have been to known to be willful and sometimes to not listen to its owner. A firm hand is a must when training your Manchester Terrier.

Another thing that you might want to think about if you’re looking at getting either a toy Manchester Terrier or a standard Manchester Terrier is whether you have children, specifically young children. They do have the tendency to become aggressive and if this is not bred out of them, or even trained out of them when they are young, you will want to be very careful.

And since they were bred specifically as rat hunters, if you have any pet hamsters, gerbils or mice roaming around the house you might want to think of getting another type of dog or giving away your rodent pets. Although the Manchester Terrier can be kept alone with smaller animals if trained from the beginning, you might not want to trust in training against instinct, too much. The best thing that you can do would be to take temptation out of the way!

Boston Terriers have a lot of personality. They are intelligent, alert, well mannered and gentle. Some however, can be a little willful. Perhaps their willfulness comes from the fact that Boston Terriers were originally bred for fighting. That is why if you want a Boston Terrier for a pet, it is always an excellent idea to get one while they are still young.
Having this breed of dog takes a lot of time, love and care. Looking for Boston Terrier puppies for sale is no easy task either. There are a lot of things to think about before finding Boston Terrier puppies for sale. You have to be absolutely positive that it’s what you really want.
Boston Terrier puppies hate being left alone. They love constant attention and care, which will be very hard for you if you don’t have the time or you’re not that willing to put in the time needed to raise this puppy properly. They also have health problems, so you will need to give them ample interest to make sure that they grow up healthy.
In the case of Boston Terrier puppies, the cost is not only the daily expenses and the initial price of the dog but your time as well. It is important that you be determined and organized in your ways of getting a puppy. Finding Boston Terrier puppies for sale can become a daunting task.
You must be aware of several things when you try finding Boston Terrier puppies for sale. When you buy Boston Terrier puppies from pet shops, breeders, mills and online it is important to find out if they give good Boston Terrier puppy care. There are a lot of people out there who sell Boston Terrier puppies without a license.
Boston Terrier puppies for sale online might either be deceased, poorly kept or gravely ill. Some pet stores, breeders and especially puppy mills are very good at eluding federal licensing regulations and inspection laws. Even the Internet has a lot of large scale dog unsanitary and unhealthy breeding grounds.
The best source for purebred Boston Terrier puppies for sale is a breeder. First-rate breeders have an extensive knowledge about the breeds they sell. They do not just let dogs mate to produce offspring. Breeders are very particular about the quality of a puppy, so they are very careful in selecting parents chiefly because Boston Terriers have a very small gene pool. Because of this fact there are a lot of far from perfect Boston Terriers.
You have to be able to relate to the breeder, you will see a breeder’s sincerity in his recommending a suitable puppy for you. Highly regarded breeders recommend a puppy based on whether its personality matches yours.
The best breeders are those that provide a healthy environment, plenty of time, and medical attention for their Boston Terrier Puppy. Having a Boston Terrier for a pet is a commitment that lasts for thirteen to fifteen years. If you take very good care of them and train them well, your reward is a companion that’s loyal to the end.

Most people find terrier dogs to be great companions for their homes and with a bit of regular grooming and extra care, they are prime candidates for the bachelor or the family man both. This is because the terrier comes in many varieties and proves to be a real pal for the solitary pet-lover who may want more than just someone to talk to; the terrier is a small but incredibly cute doggy that loves to frolic and play and is comfortable in apartment housing as much as it loves playing outdoors.
Its history reveals the terrier to be a breed that was mainly raised for the purpose of being a hunting dog that killed vermin too; however, over the years, its features and characteristics have altered due to cross-breeding, training and climate factors and so, the modern day terriers are not quite everybody’s idea of cuddly dogs, but still very adorable.
There are some terrier varieties that may qualify for some amount of lap-dog tendencies but mostly they are far from the overly cutesy kinds; being of average intelligence like other breeds of medium dogs, they have grown to be less aggressive than their ancestors but are far from being timid.
One of the famous terrier varieties includes the soft-coated Wheatens that are alert, energetic and confident making for very intelligence and obedient watch dogs that respond quickly to obedience training. Besides this variety, there is the Parson Russell Terrier, which is a bold, rather clever type with a lively disposition and makes for a great playmate in a household full of children. It is also a very independent kind of pet dog that is filled with inherent mischievousness and a nose for the undiscovered, so potential owners are warned to expect a certain level of activity with these dogs around!
Yet another terrier variety is the Norwich brand of small pet dogs that are smaller than the other small breeds like the Yorkshire Terriers and require very little in terms of upkeep and space, staying quite contented in the most modest housing quarters. Known to have an energetic nature, these are loving and fearless pets to have around you that are both stocky and generally happy by nature too; thus they make for great companions.
Another variety of the terrier pack is the Norfolk Terrier, also a spirited, brave and sporting sub-species of the terrier pack that has a lot in common with the Norwich variety, though they can be distinguished by the manner in which their ears fold up.
The Kerry Blue variety of terrier dogs, on the other hand, is more of a workman-like dog that makes for a great watchdog as well as a good choice for farm-owners; they got their name from the unusual color of their coat which is a blue-black changeover from their young days.
The last variety of terriers we cover here for your interest is the Wire Fox Terrier; these dogs are powerfully built, have great capacity for endurance in any weather condition and are quick to move, thus highly regarded for their alertness and swiftness of action.
Choose your kind of terrier depending on the amount of energy and time you are willing to spend with your pet – all the best in getting the most exercise yourself – when you’re living with the feisty kind!
